How a moss removal visit runs

1. Look at the roof first. Before any brush touches the tiles we check the slopes from the scaffold tower or ladder. Cracked tiles, loose ridges and old patch repairs are noted, because a clean roof shows every defect and you should know about them before the work, not after.
2. Lift the thick growth by hand. Heavy cushions of moss come off with scrapers and soft brushes, working down the slope with the laps of the tiles, never against them. That keeps water out of the joints while the growth is lifted.
3. Low-pressure rinse where it suits. Where the covering can take it, a low-pressure clean shifts the remaining loose material. Old clay and fragile slate get a gentler hand method instead. High pressure is never used on a roof covering.
4. Treat what is left. A biocide treatment goes onto the cleaned slopes to kill the roots of moss, algae and lichen still on the surface. The roof keeps brightening for weeks afterwards as the treated growth dies back and weathers off.
5. Clear the gutters and the ground. Everything that came off the roof is bagged and taken away. The gutters and downpipe outlets are emptied so the first heavy rain after the visit runs away freely.

Choose the level of moss treatment

• Clean and treat: The full job: growth removed, slopes treated and gutters cleared. This is the right choice when moss is lifting tile edges or filling the gutters every autumn.
• Treatment only: Light growth on a sound roof can be treated without a full clean. The moss dies back over the following weeks and washes off in the rain.
• Clean with repairs: When the inspection finds slipped or cracked tiles, we price roof repairs alongside the clean so the roof is sound as well as tidy.

How long moss removal takes

A moss clean on an average house is a short job once access is set up. Large roofs, steep slopes and heavy growth on shaded sides take longer, and we agree the plan for scaffold or tower access in the written quote.

Looking after it afterwards

Keep overhanging branches cut back so the slopes dry out after rain. Have the gutters cleared each autumn. A light re-treatment every few years stops the moss taking hold again on north-facing and shaded roofs.
