Keep water moving through the roof's most exposed junctions.

Lead protects places where a roof changes direction or meets masonry. A wall flashing covers the joint above the tiles, a valley collects water between slopes, and a parapet gutter carries rain behind a raised wall. These details work in different ways and need different layouts. We inspect the failed lead and the surfaces beneath it before recommending repair or renewal, with the water route and the adjoining covering both taken into account.

A split in lead needs more investigation than simply covering the visible opening. Metal expands and contracts as temperatures change, so the support, joints and fixing arrangement matter. We look for signs of strain, poorly formed corners and failed connections to masonry. Replacement lead is formed to suit the junction, with attention to laps and movement. That approach addresses the detail responsible for the failure instead of leaving the same weakness underneath another patch.

Valleys and parapet gutters must carry the water arriving from the roof above them. Debris, a damaged outlet or a poorly supported lining interrupts that route and puts neighbouring rooms at risk of leaks. We examine the full affected run and explain the work needed at its ends and edges. Your lead work quote describes the junction being renewed and any lifting of adjacent tiles or slates required to complete the repair properly.

Step by step

Trace the junction before forming new lead

  1. Follow water through the detail. We establish where rain arrives and where the junction should discharge it. This distinguishes a split lining from an obstructed channel or a failed connection higher up the wall.
  2. Inspect the lead and support. The metal is checked for cracks, lifting and signs of strain. Its backing and fixing arrangement are considered alongside the visible surface, because a poorly supported detail needs more than a surface patch.
  3. Plan access to the edges. Tiles, slates or masonry joints that conceal the lead edges are identified before removal. The repair scope explains which surrounding materials need lifting to reach and renew the weathering detail properly.
  4. Form the replacement junction. Lead is shaped for the particular flashing, valley or gutter, with appropriate laps, support and movement provision. The connection to the roof covering and masonry is completed as part of that detail.
  5. Check discharge and reinstatement. Adjacent coverings are put back and the route out of the lead-lined area is reviewed. Corners, outlets and upper terminations are inspected together to confirm how the renewed junction will shed rain.

Three lead details with different drainage roles

  • Wall and chimney flashings: Flashings bridge the meeting point between roofing and masonry. The upper edge needs a secure termination while the lower section covers the roof junction, including stepped arrangements beside a pitched slope.
  • Valleys between slopes: A valley collects rain from the roofs on either side. Renewing its lead involves checking support, laps and the cut covering edges so the channel remains able to carry water downwards.
  • Parapet gutter linings: A concealed channel behind a raised wall needs a sound lining and a clear outlet. We assess its length, corners and discharge arrangement before specifying the lead and the connections around it.

How long lead work takes

The time needed for lead work follows the complexity of the junction and the access to its concealed edges. Opening tiled valleys, forming parapet corners and chasing flashing into masonry involve different preparation and reinstatement stages.

What affects the price

  • Type and dimensions of the lead weathering detail
  • Condition of the timber or masonry supporting it
  • Amount of covering lifted to expose concealed edges
  • Corners, steps, laps and outlet connections requiring formation
  • Access for working beside walls or within valleys

Lead repairs are priced around the complete junction, including preparation and reinstatement. Ask for a free quote and identify the wall, valley or parapet channel where water is entering or collecting.

Looking after it afterwards

Keep lead-lined channels free from accumulated debris through planned maintenance. Watch from a safe position for new lifting at flashings or blockages near outlets. Avoid fixing cables or other fittings through the metal, which creates a fresh water-entry point.

Before you book

Straight answers about your roof

Why has the lead split beside a previous patch?
The surrounding lead still moves with temperature changes. We inspect the layout and fixings for strain so the repair addresses the cause of splitting across that detail.
Can you replace lead without renewing the whole roof?
Junction work can involve lifting only the surrounding tiles or slates. We assess their condition and explain the access needed to remove and refit them around the new lead.
What is a parapet gutter?
It is a drainage channel behind a wall that rises above the roof edge. Its lining and outlet must collect roof water and direct it away without leaking into the building.
Do you repair the lead around chimneys?
Chimney lead work covers the junction between the stack and roof slopes. We check its connection to the masonry and adjacent covering before deciding which sections need renewal.
Why does replacement lead need room for movement?
Lead changes dimension with temperature. Its layout, joints and fixings must account for that movement so the metal is not forced to absorb repeated strain at one rigid corner or connection.
Can roof cleaning reveal a hidden lead defect?
Debris can obscure a split or damaged edge within a valley. Clearing the channel exposes its condition, but a failed lining still needs a lead repair rather than cleaning alone to restore its protection.
Is chimney repointing included in a flashing repair?
The flashing connection includes its own masonry termination. Wider deteriorated joints belong to [[chimney repairs|/services/chimney-repairs/]] and are identified separately, so you understand the distinction between renewing metalwork and restoring the stack's brickwork.
