A sound deck, a suitable covering and a clear drainage route.

Water sitting beside a rooflight or dripping at the extension wall needs an inspection of more than the visible surface. A flat roof relies on its deck, falls, outlets and perimeter details as well as its waterproof covering. We examine those parts together and explain where the failure starts. A repair is assessed against the condition of the surrounding material, while replacement allows damaged decking and poor drainage details to be addressed.

Country Roof Ltd fits EPDM rubber, GRP fibreglass and felt systems. Each needs its own preparation and detailing, so choosing the finish comes after understanding the roof. EPDM uses a rubber membrane with compatible joints and accessories. GRP combines glass reinforcement and resin over a suitable deck. Felt uses sealed layers and laps. We explain the proposed system alongside the edges, wall upstands and rooflight kerbs that complete its waterproof enclosure.

Covering over a soft deck hides a problem that still needs fixing. For renewal, we remove the failed covering and inspect the boards before the new system goes down. We also check how rain reaches the outlet and where the roof meets the building. Your written quote identifies the covering, the preparation and the details included. All our work is guaranteed, including the agreed flat roof installation and its completed weathering details.

Our method

How a flat roof renewal is assembled

  1. Locate the failure. Examine the flat roof surface, perimeter and outlet to establish where water enters or collects.
  2. Uncover the decking. Strip the failed system and inspect the support beneath it for softness or deterioration.
  3. Prepare for drainage. Renew agreed decking and address the route to the outlet before applying the waterproof finish.
  4. Install the specified system. Fit EPDM rubber, GRP fibreglass or felt using the preparation and details required by that system.
  5. Connect edges and openings. Finish upstands, rooflight kerbs and drainage outlets, then inspect the completed perimeter.

Step by step

Plan the waterproof layer from deck to outlet

  1. Locate the wet area. We compare the indoor leak with seams, rooflight kerbs and wall connections above it. Standing water is assessed alongside these details to establish how rain reaches the affected part of the roof.
  2. Check the base condition. For renewal, the old system is removed to expose the deck. Soft boards, open joints and unsuitable surfaces are identified before specifying the preparation needed beneath the replacement waterproof layer.
  3. Establish the water route. The roof's fall directs rain towards its outlet. We examine low points and drainage connections, then explain any preparation required so the new covering does not reproduce a defective drainage arrangement.
  4. Form the selected system. The prepared base receives EPDM, GRP or felt with the accessories and jointing details suited to that material. Corners and changes in level are treated as part of the waterproof layer.
  5. Complete perimeter connections. Wall upstands, edge trims and outlets are finished and inspected with the rooflight details. The completed covering must connect around its perimeter as well as protect the open area in the middle.

The flat roof systems we fit

  • EPDM rubber: A flexible rubber membrane covers the prepared roof, with compatible seams, outlets and perimeter components. The roof's shape and openings determine how sheets are arranged and how their junctions are completed.
  • GRP fibreglass: Glass reinforcement and resin form a covering over suitable decking. Preparation, edge trims and application conditions are central to the finished system, particularly around kerbs and the meeting point with walls.
  • Felt roofing: Felt creates a layered waterproof covering with sealed overlaps. The installation includes the upstands and drainage edges, with the proposed build-up described alongside any deck repairs needed beneath the finished surface.

How long flat roofs takes

Flat roof work is scheduled around the selected system's application conditions as well as the roof area. Removing failed decking, correcting drainage and detailing several rooflights add stages beyond fitting a covering to a sound, uncomplicated base.

What affects the price

  • Area to receive the specified flat roof system
  • Type and condition of the existing deck boards
  • Preparation needed to establish suitable drainage falls
  • Number of rooflight kerbs, upstands and internal corners
  • Outlet connections and access to the roof perimeter

The deck and junctions belong in a flat roof quote alongside the surface material. Ask for a free quote and tell us where water gathers or enters the room beneath.

Looking after it afterwards

Keep unnecessary foot traffic off the finished surface and avoid placing sharp objects on it. Observe outlets from a safe position after rain. Report lifted trims or a new low spot before repeated wetting affects the deck underneath.

Straight answers about your roof

Which flat roof system should I choose?
The roof shape, deck, junctions and drainage guide the choice. We explain how EPDM, GRP or felt will be detailed on your particular roof before you decide.
Can a flat roof be repaired without replacing everything?
An isolated defect in an otherwise sound covering is assessed for repair. Widespread deterioration or an unsound deck requires a different scope from sealing one split.
Will a fresh covering remove a low spot?
A new surface follows the base beneath it. We inspect the deck and drainage falls so a low area is dealt with in the preparation rather than hidden.
Do you work around existing rooflights?
We inspect the kerb, upstand and surrounding covering as a single detail. The proposed roof system must connect properly around the opening to keep rain outside.
Why is the wall junction included in the inspection?
Water can enter above the upstand or behind its connection to the wall. We assess that route before blaming the main surface, and specify [[lead work|/services/lead-work/]] where the masonry flashing needs attention.
Can a new system be laid over wet decking?
The deck must meet the preparation requirements of the chosen system. Wet or deteriorated boards need assessment and appropriate work before installation, rather than being concealed beneath a fresh waterproof covering.
Does a flat roof still need a slope?
A flat roof needs a designed fall to move rain towards its outlet. Checking that drainage route is part of planning the work because the waterproof material alone cannot correct the shape underneath.
